Martin Penner (1849-1928) Obituaries

Obituary from Botschafter der Wahrheit, Sept 1, 1928

Preacher Martin Penner. It pleased the Ruler over life and death to take our dear father from our side through death. After our dear mother predeceased him six weeks ago, he died after a five week, finally heavy illness on the 6 August at 3:40pm. He was born on December 8, 1849 in Margenau, Molotschna, South Russia. In 1871, our parents entered matrimony and in 1874 travelled to America, Manitoba, and finally here to Greenland where also they both died. Surviving, of children, we seven sons and three daughters, grandchildren eighty-three, great-grandchildren fifteen, two brothers and a sister. We view in accordance with confidence and hope that his soul is safe through the blood of Christ in God. Our parents became converted and were included into the fellowship in the year 1881 through the servant Johannes Holdemann, and in the next year our father was commissioned as a preacher and since then served the community in a sense of weakness. Tests and severe trials were also not absent in his life; but God be thanked, who gave also the victory. His age was 78 years, 7 months and 29 days. In matrimony lived nearly 57 years.

On the 8 August, the dear deceased’s body was delivered to the lap of the earth. Many mourners attended in order to give the deceased a last escort. The passage was: Luke 17: 20, 21. The brothers Abr. Isaac, Ger. Goossen and Jak. T. Wiebe spoke to the congregation.
