1896 Land Holdings
By the year 1896, most of the land near what is now Landmark was already in private hands. This is not to say that the land holders lived on their land. Indeed, very few settlers lived in the area shown in the below map. The land was owned largely by speculators, both corporations and private individuals. Numerous owners were from the neighboring areas of Lorette to the north and the East Reserve to the south. Many non-local owners from other areas of Manitoba, mostly Winnipeg, while other owners were from as far away places such as Ontario, Quebec, and even England. It turns out that the northeast tip of what is now Landmark was, in 1896, owned by the Hudson Bay Company.
The below map is based on the R.M. of Tache 1896 Assessment Role for the below portion of Township 8 Range 5E. This Role is held in the Lorette office of the R.M. of Tache.
White areas had no listed owner. Difficult to read text is denoted by either (?) or ___.
