OBITUARY - KATHARINA BERGMANN

JAN.14, 1980

It has pleased our heavenly Father to take our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother, Mrs. Katharina Bergmann into His heavenly home. She was born on May 7th, 1887, to Gerhard and Sara Wiens at their estate in South Russia. At the age of 16, she, along with her widowed mother, brothers and sisters, moved to Steinbach, Molotschna.

Here she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior, was baptized and was received into the membership of the Alliance Church. In 1912 she was united in holy matrimony with our late father, Abram P. Bergmann. As a young couple, they moved to Rueckenau, a village in the Ukraine, joined the Mennonite Brethren Church there and had started farming when World War I broke out. Extremely difficult years followed, but God preserved them miraculously through the war, the following Revolution and through the famine.

In 1925, the Lord opened a way for our parents to emigrate to Canada and they were always very thankful that along with their 7 children they found a new home and religious freedom here. They farmed in the Steinbach area at several locations and were blessed with another son and daughter. They helped organize the Mennonite Brethren Church in Steinbach and were active in various capacities. During the depression years, they often had very difficult times, but through it all, Mother always managed to make us all feel warm and loved at home. They celebrated their Silver Wedding Anniversary in 1937 amongst a host of relative and friends at our farm home near Ste. Anne, giving God the glory.

In 1949 our parents retired to Steinbach and lived happily for many years surrounded by children and grandchildren, stressing their faith to God to all. The planned Golden Wedding had to be postponed because father had a heart attack, but 5 years later, the whole family, along with our thankful parents, celebrated their 55th Anniversary and testified to the Lord's faithfulness.

Nine years ago the Lord took our father home. Mother missed him very much and her health and strength began to deteriorate. During this last year she became completely helpless and bedridden. Our 2 sisters cared for her in a loving and selfless way at home. On Friday, January 11th, at 2:30 in the afternoon, the Lord called his weary child home at the age of 92 years, 8 months and 4 days.

She was predeceased by our father, Abram P. Bergmann, in 1971, and by 2 grandsons, Daniel Froese in 1959 in India, and Abe Bergmann in 1978. She leaves to mourn her passing, 4 sons, Peter and Anna, Henry and Helen, George and Esther, Abe and Margaret, all of the Steinbach area, and 5 daughters, Mary and Helen at home, Sarah (Mrs. Jacob Giesbrecht), Betty, (Mrs. John Goertzen), and Annie (Mrs. George Froese); also 29 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. Anna Dyck and Margarete (Mrs. Peter Schmidt), and 2 sisters-in-law, Mrs. Susanna Wiens and Mrs. Katie Rempel, all of Winnipeg, along with a host of relatives and friends.

We mourn not as those who have no hope, but look forward to meeting our Mother in Glory.
