Johann Regehr (c.1866-1926)

Johann Regehr was born in about 1866 on the Steinbach estate, Molotschna Colony as the only son of David and Katharina Regehr. Johann had three older sisters and two younger ones. Johann grew up on the Steinbach estate and would have attended its private school along with his siblings.

In about 1888, Johann married Anna Sawatzky. They settled in Steinbach where Johann later owned a substantial farm of 60 dessiatines (162 acres). Here, Johann and Anna raised a large family of ten children: David, Johann, Peter, Isaac, Helena, Nicholai, Heinrich, Jacob, Gerhard, and Katharina. They had two additional children who died young of scarlet fever.

Johann and Anna took in his aging parents in the last years of their lives. Anna Bergen (1895-1987) also lived with them and attended to the household needs of the family. Johann’s wife, Anna, died in 1924 of typhus. Regehr letters in 1924 and 1925 note that by this time Johann was of poor health and suffering from asthma. Johann died in 1926.
