Johann Klaas Dueck (1801-1866)

Some recollections of Johann Klaas Dueck are recorded by his grandson, Johann W. Dueck of Rosenort, Manitoba. These appear translated into English in Delbert Plett’s History and Events, p85ff. An excerpt from page 88 reads thus:

The dear grandfather sawed a lot of wood in his old age as he could hardly be without work. In spite of his age he was a very robust and was only a small person physically. After it had finally become too hard for him to work, grandfather busied himself very much with the reading in the Bible, Martyrs' Mirror and other sacred writings. Often one found him sitting in tears by any one of a number of beneficial books. In his latter days he also spoke much about his "desire to part from here and to be with Christ". He said so especially after the dear grandmother had been dead for five or six years. Although grandfather's eyesight was quite good, so that he could almost always read without glasses, his hearing was so much worse that one had to speak very loud if he was to understand. He experimented with the ear trumpet but this also did not really seem to work. This occasioned great sadness for him especially as he could no longer hear God's word on Sunday. Finally after a Pilgrimage of ninety-three years, he was released from all his earthly suffering and cares, by the Lord who took him to be with him in his Heavenly Realm of Peace.
