Helena Loewen (1806-1879) |
|
Helena Loewen was born on February 12, 1806 in Muntau, Molotschna Colony, South Russia. Her first marriage was to Johann Klaas Dueck. Johann died in 1866 and later Helena married to Heinrich D. Reimer (1791-1884). Helena and Heinrich immigrated to Canada in 1875. They settled in Gruenfeld, Manitoba, know known as Kleefeld. In his book Gruenfeld, Henry Fast notes the following on Helena Loewen and Heinrich Reimer, page 89: Heinrich had immigrated with his parents, Arend Reimers, to Russia from Prussia when he was 13 years old. He married Maria Fast and settled in the village of Muntau, Molotschna. His second marriage was to the widow of minister Johann Dueck and with her, he immigrated to Manitoba in 1875. They made their home in Gruenfeld at the homes of Helena's children, first at the Abraham L. Duecks and then at Jacob L. Duecks. The wives of the Dueck brothers were Heinrich's grandchildren. Helena who had been bright and alert in her younger years lost her memory in the last months prior to her death. Heinrich suffered loss of hearing in his later years and spent much of his time reading devotional material. A horse and buggy accident hastened his death in 1884, at the age of 93 years. His registered homestead on NE 9-6-5E was willed to his grandson Jacob L. Dueck.
