Heinrich D. Reimer (1791-1884) |
|
Heinrich D. Reimer (1791-1884) was one of the few to experience life in the three historic Mennonite homelands of Prussia, Russia, and North America. From his preserved letters to family, he is personable, sensitive, and nurturing. Five of his personal letters are to family are published in Henry Fast‘s book Gruenfeld, and further unpublished letters are in the possession of descendants in the Landmark, Manitoba area.
Obituary Obituary from the Mennonitische Rundschau, August 6, 1884, p. 1. Translated into English. Niverville, July 14: Regarding the deceased Heinrich Reimer, whose obituary appeared already in the previous issue, our friend Loewen from Niverville reports the following to us: Our elderly father Heinrich Reimer, weary of life, passed from here into eternity last Saturday, July 11. His life span reached the rare age of 93 years, 2 months and 3 days. His ill health being mostly weakness from old age, it thus induced his death after 24 hours of great pain. He was born on May 9, 1791 in West Prussia, and at age 13 journeyed with his parents to Russia. He entered into marriage with Maria nee Fast, received a Wirtshaft in Muntau (Molotschna Colony). Here, after a many years of marriage with his partner our mother, was separated from her through death. He remarried in his old age with the widow Johan Dueck of same place, with whom he emigrated together in 1875 to Manitoba, America. After 13 years of marriage, she died in 1879. Of his children, nine preceded him into eternity and five are yet alive. Two of his children live in Russia, two in Minnesota and a daughter, which is my wife, in Manitoba. A son Heinrich Reimer died also already here in Manitoba. His family register is the following: children died 9, alive 5; grandchildren died 51, alive 53; great-grandchildren died 61, alive 94. So his family clan now amounts to 154 souls alive and 121 died.
Obituary Obituary from the Mennonitische Rundschau, July 30, 1884, p. 2. Translated into English. Niverville Post Office (Gruenfeld), July 12. Valued Rundschau. Because many friends and acquaintance know the elderly grandfather H. Reimer, may this message testify that it pleased our dear Heavenly Father to take him today at one a.m. from our side. Now his soul rests in Jerusalem after so much grief and misery in this earthly life. How firm is our hope. He was in his 94th year of life. He was ill one day, struggling greatly to breathe. We’ll commemorate his burial Tuesday, the 15th, in the morning, delivering his remains into the lap of the earth. Because you readership reaches also the friends in Friedensfeld, his nieces and nephews are given greetings. Johann W. Dueck
