Aganetha Barkman (1828-1899) |
|
from Mennonitische Rundschau, July 5, 1899, page 1 Kleefeld, June 21, 1899: In the Rundschau. The deceased, that the entire humanity decays and there and again demands its victims, cut off in the last days a thread of life, and to be sure has taken our dear mother from Greenland, Steinbach. Because the dear mother already was old and has various friends and acquaintance in almost all areas of the world, I will write on behalf of Father, Peter Toews, her life story and sorrow story in short here: She was a daughter of Jacob Barkman, Rueckenau, South Russia, where she was born on June 18, 1828 and had also lived there during her youth. Through her marriage with our father, they then came to Prangenau. From there our parents moved to Margenau and lived there approximately 11 years. From there they moved in 1867 to Borosenko onto purchased land and in 1874 migrated from here. For the last 25 years and generally in the colder time of year, Mother suffered very much from shortness of breath and would often lay in bed for months. And so it was in the last 2 years where she no longer came out of bed, in a sitting position carried her sorrows in patience and in love to her Savior. She had requested, as her solution approached, in firm hope of what she had so often been longing for. She died on June 18, exactly on her 71st birthday, and was on the 20th buried amidst a large gathering. She leaves behind her husband, 7 children, 63 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, mourning the return home in grateful submission, that the Lord redeemed her finally of her sorrows and hope. Five children and 18 grandchildren predeceased her. With best greetings, Jacob B. Toews ■
