Odessa 2007

Odessa is a major Ukrainian city. It was the last stop on our tour of the Ukraine.

When renovating a building, they concealed them with huge canvasses that showed the completed effort. One than once we were fooled into not realizing they were canvasses and not the building itself!

A beautiful and popular park in the heart of Odessa.

Odessa opera house, modeled after one in Vienna. No doubt a marvelous structure, but what I remember most were strange and persistent bird calls came from the roof. We later found out this was a sound recording to scare off the pigeons!

Five star hotel in Odessa

Just another five star hotel, right? This one stood out like a sore thumb! Odessa is an historic city of character buildings. There was no place for a building like this. And besides, the internet was 80 Hryvnia per hour compared to 5 Hryvnia at the local stops!

Two hundred steps from the harbor to the city. A free funicular on the left (not shown) was a fun alternative.

Odessa had many newly renovated buildings. But occasionally you’d see a nearly crumbling structure like this one.

A fun sign with distances to various places around the world. My home town of Vancouver was listed as over 9000km away.
